What is a domain?
A domain is an Internet address, which can be used for viewing web pages, and sending or receiving emails. For example, apple.com or microsoft.com are domains, which can be used for web sites like http://www.apple.com and http://www.microsoft.com. They can also be used for email, for example, info@apple.com or sales@microsoft.com.
Why should I register a domain?
Your domain name is your unique identity and address on the Internet. It is where your intended audience can access your goods and services 365 days a year. It gives you a unique opportunity to develop one-to-one relationships with your existing and potential customers in a way that wasn't previously possible.
How can I use a domain?
The most common use of domains is to create websites. A site can be used to market your products and services to a worldwide audience giving them the option to contact you via email. Sites can also run full e-commerce facilities, which enable you to accept orders and payments online. In either case you will be interacting with your potential customers in a unique one-to-one relationship.

What is the difference between domain types?
There is no hard and fast rule but the following gives you a basic understanding of typical usage:
.co.uk's are generally used for companies or individuals based in the United Kingdom.
.com's are used in America but are also generally accepted as the international domain signature.
.net's are generally used to describe organisations or user groups, colleges etc. .org's are generally used to describe organisations, charities etc. .plc.uk & .ltd.uk are only available companies with the exact same name.
How do I register my domain name in other countries?
The process of registering domains overseas is complex. Each country has its own authority responsible for setting of the rules and regulations relating to the registration of domains. Many authorities insist that only companies can register names, others want trademark evidence, and others want proof that companies have a physical presence in the country, or combinations thereof.
What on-going costs can I expect?
Every so often, normally for most us it is one or two years, you have to decide whether you want to renew your domain name, at which point your renewal fees will become due. You can choose whether to renew your domain through your existing registrar or not.
Who 'owns' a domain?
No one ever really 'owns' a domain. It is in reality 'rented' from the system for an agreed period. Once a domain has been registered it is 'owned' (if you like) outright by the registrant, which can be a person, company or organisation. The exception to this a .ltd.uk or .plc.uk domain name which needs to be in the name of a registered company.
